P&G and HOPE share the Power of Clean Water with Karachi's slums this summer

Karachi, June 05, 2017: Procter & Gamble (P&G) continues to join hands with its long-term NGO partner HOPE to help transform lives through the power of clean drinking water. Over a million liters of clean drinking water is being available to people in need in urban slum communities of Karachi this summer through P&G Purifier of Water sachets.

Too many people lack access to safe drinking water. Clean water can improve people's health, help children stay in school and provide better economic opportunities for their families. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 1000 children die every day from diseases caused by drinking contaminated water. These losses are more than those caused by HIV/AIDS and malaria combined. Moreover, diarrhea caused by drinking contaminated drinking water is a leading cause of illness and death among infants and children in the developing world, including Pakistan.

Given the intense summer heat in recent years, availability of clean drinking water is critical. Unhygienic water compounds issues for the slum dwellers, leading to dehydration, dysentery, diarrhea, typhoid, cholera and gastroenteritis. The distribution and use of P&G Purifier of Water sachets offers a handy solution for communities which do not have access to other affordable sources of clean drinking water.

The program will last until October 2017 reaching an estimated 7000 people in urban slums across Karachi, in particularly those areas where water supply is erratic and contaminated. Demonstrations on the use of P&G Purifier of Water sachets will be conducted for the families and revisits will take place a few months post the initial distribution of P&G Purifier of Water sachets, to monitor progress and improvement in health.

During the last 12 years, working with a wide range of more than 150 advocacy and implementing partners, the P&G CSDW program has provided clean drinking water in more than 85 countries. More than 12 billion liters of purified drinking water have been provided helping save thousands of lives, and helping empower women and girls.

To date, more than 865 million liters of clean drinking water have been provided to Pakistani communities in need through this program. This is enough to provide nearly 5.6 million people with clean drinking water for 3 months.

About P&G Purifier of Water:

In collaboration with the U.S. Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, P&G has developed a low-cost powder technology, which has been specifically designed to purify drinking water as per World Health Organization standards.
